General Mills Canada blasts through United Way fundraising target

TORONTO, Ont. – General Mills Canada today announced its employees have far exceeded its 2011 fundraising campaign goal in support of the United Way, raising 20 per cent more than the $394,000 target. At an employee celebration event, General Mills revealed that it has raised $474,180 for United Way of Peel Region, 23 per cent more than in 2010, to help the organization further its ongoing support of countless community services, programs and initiatives across Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.

In addition to the monetary donation, General Mills contributed numerous bags of clothing to the Boys & Girls Club of Peel Region which were collected through the “Stuff the Bus with Warmth” employee clothing drive held during the first two weeks of November. More than 1,900 pants and sweaters, 450 coats, 500 hats, scarves and gloves, and 80 pairs of shoes and boots were gathered and will be delivered to the residents of Acorn Place to help keep them warm throughout the winter.

"I am extremely proud of the continued generosity of our employees and their dedication to helping those who are less fortunate in our community,” said David Homer, president, General Mills Canada. “We have reached new heights with this year’s campaign, far surpassing the monetary donation seen in previous years. With the help of United Way, our hard work will go a long way in helping the residents of Peel who need it most.”

Ninety-five percent of General Mills employees participated in this year’s campaign, with an average contribution per donor of $614, up 24 per cent from last year.

“On behalf of the more than 400,000 people in our community each year who rely on United Way-funded agencies for support, I thank each and every General Mills employee sincerely for their efforts and generosity,” said Shelley White, president & CEO, United Way of Peel Region upon hearing the campaign results. “These individuals are truly leaders in our community and across Canada.”

This marks the 13th year that General Mills and its employees have joined together to fundraise in support of United Way of Peel Region.
